I’m a french college student, I am studying in engineering, Computing and Information Systems. I always loved challenges, new experiences and learning freedom.
I took interest in learning japanese in July 2018. At that time, I discovered a wonderful game, called 月影のシミュラクル (Tsukikage no Simulacre). The soundtrack was too amazing, I had to check what was it from. When I saw it wasn’t available in english… Out of pure frenzy… I kicked myself into this japanese language trip.
My japanese journey
Quickly, I found that I was not satisfied with the methods I was shown. I tried downloading apps to learn kana, read university classes, tried Duolingo, tried going for Julien Fontanier, a popular french youtuber who teaches japanese. I failed. Again and again. At some point, I thought about quitting.
At some point, I said “F*** that”. I downloaded the “Rikaichamp and other tools to look up words very easily”. And I tried playing games. Anything I found. I started with Tsukikage no Simulacre, and I failed miserably. I tried other things, other games, other novels. But then I could take these failures. I was having fun, I felt like I was progressing much faster.
At this point, I found the AJATT method, Tae Kim guide, Japanese ammo Misa and Cure Dolly. I used some of them as “very basic lessons”, and some of them as “Patchworks” for my difficulties in reading. That’s the reason this website is set up this way.
I started spending hours everyday. I also failed a lot on using Anki. I could never find motivation to go through my cards. So I asked Cure Dolly, and she advised me to make my own cards, with the picture. After a year and almost a half, I’m still using these. It wasn’t that I could not learn vocabulary. I just couldn’t find the method that looked like me.
And I’m still learning japanese. It’s been amazing, I enjoy every second of it. So what story will you share with japanese?
